Village Halloween Parade
6th avenue Spring/21th
Halloween is the closest to a spontaneous street festival - anybody with
a costume can participate by roaming the streets or marching in the parade - as
we did. Quite a feeling to walk up in the middle of 6th avenue crowded with
people and inadvertently and anonymously appear in 100s of tourists home movies
and photographs. The only problem with the crowds on and along the parade route,
it was getting a bit harder to get back to the west-side, as they seem to insist
in pushing everybody east at the end of the route. Even without, or after the
parade, here is enough critical mass of people in costumes around downtown to
get fully into the Halloween spirit without having to go to a party somewhere or
to feel silly riding the subway dressed as a vampire, as a web-page, a clown or
an MTA track worker - or maybe he was real? Obviously the nice dry and warm
weather was helping too.
