St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
at Carnegie Hall
First visit to Carnegie Hall in this season for the first concert in a
series of international orchestras. The program notes summarize the evening as
being focused on pianists: 2 russian pianists/composers Prokofiew and
Rachmaninoff flanking a piano concerto by Robert Schumann, written for his new
bride, Clara Schumann. The Schumann piano concerto in A minor also leaves the
strongest impression of the evening - pianist Helene Grimaud and the orchestra
show how subtle and delicate orchestral music can be. Prokofiev's early 20th
century spin on classical music with his "Mozart spoof" funny in its own
ways.
