Defiance
Manhattan Theater Club - 131 W 55th st (6/7th ave)
A sequel to
Doubt
and presumably part 2 of a trilogy. The set design reflects continuity with
Doubt, so does the presence of take-no-prisoners religious zeal in the person of
an evangelical chaplain. As in doubt, the center is an institution - this time
the US Marine Corps (or the military in general) instead of the Catholic church.
As opposed to the church, where faith is essential, non is required in the
military. Two highly decorated and successful officers - neither of which
believes in what they do. Both their unconditional allegiance is to the corps
and they have more than proven their willingness to sacrifice their live without
even asking what for. Its a good place for people who don't want to make any
decisions or take change - there are rules for anything and you just do as you
are told. As doubt may be the most corrosive force for an institution based on
faith, defiance may be the same for an institution based on obedience.
