The Frogs

Vivian Beaumont Theater - Lincoln Center

A snappy and flashy vegas style show with comedy, dancers, costumes, pyrotechnics and a moving stage set - but probably the only one that features an all-out literary smack-down competition: in the left corner George Bernard Shaw vs. in the left corner, William Shakespeare. Staying with the spirit of the original, opening in 405 B.C in Athens to a festival audience, scared and demoralized by a war that has gone on for too long, Dionysos, the god of theater (and other fun things...) travels down to the underworld to get back to life a great writer of the past to act again as a beacon of moral clarity to the people of Athens. In this very loose "adaptation", Dionysos original mission is going to get Shaw, the sharp and observant social critic to hold up a mirror in all clarity, but later on finds that a poet to touch people's heart is more what we would need in these trying times to get people to reason.
