Romance
by David Mamet @ Atlantic Theater - 336 W20th st
A funny nonsensical farce with a lot of profanity and court-room jargon.
Maybe it wasn't intended, but seeing a court-scene in this absurd way reminds me
how deeply ingrained in our culture the legal system is - maybe the closest to a
cult of the secular state with obvious symbols and pompous liturgies - it even
has its form of blasphemy: contempt of court. We instantly recognize a
court-room, are familiar with its rituals. There are probably more books, plays
or movies about it than any other branch of government or societal
organization.
