At Missoula, MT

It was so nice to sleep in today for a change at the motel where Shelley and I are staying. Of course, I still woke up early, but just turned over and went back to sleep. However, rest day is still a busy one. Scott and I did some shopping for bike stuff, and more birthday party favors for the next person with a birthday. We also stopped in at Adventure Cycling, a neat organization that does many things in support of cycling nation wide. They produce really good and durable bike maps, sell clothing and gear, and act as advocates for those of us out there turning the pedals. They took our picture for the wall in the lobby, and gave us a great tour.
Everyone was cleaning and repairing their bikes today as well. Scott and I ran ours through a car wash on the way in yesterday, so we had a little less to do. We did clean our chains and lubricate them as well as fiddling with all of those little adjustments that seem to need doing. Actually, I’ve done almost no adjusting for the ride so far, and my bike is really behaving itself. Scott and I have recorded one flat each, and our tires are holding up just fine.
We had a great dinner tonight at an excellent Japanese restaurant in the downtown area. We were joined by two of the couples on the ride, Catherine and David, and Alan and Beth. Scott, Courtney, and Lauren also joined me and Shelley for this nice large dinner party.
Now, it’s an early bed for me as we’re doing another 100 mile ride tomorrow. No rest for the weary, or is it the wicked?

Scott and Chris are both ballet dancers. Here they demonstrate some of their best stretching moves. Lucia and Erwin have become ace bike mechanics. Here they show how to dismantle their bikes. If they didn't figure out how to put them back together, they won't be riding tomorrow.

This is the gang that had dinner together tonight. We had a debate as to whether the sushi was just raw fish, or as it's known Ballard- bait. Allen, our ace volunteer mechanic and Jeff, our fearless ride leader here pretend that they are not going to eat all of those cupcakes under the plastic cover.

The email I'll use this summer is brucesherman@mac.com. Send mail to this address to say hello and I'll be able to read it on the ride.
