New Ulm, MN to Owatonna, MN - 71 miles

Today we saw corn, then more corn. After that, we saw some corn, then some soybeans, than a lake. Then, well, you get the picture. American countryside at its best. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of corn for the next few weeks.
We needed another day of rest and we almost got it. There are 72 miles between New Ulm and Owatonna on the route we took, mostly highway 14 all the way. We passed through the larger town of Mankato, but it was Sunday morning and almost everything was closed.
There were few hills, just a bit of climbing here and there as we rode through a town every ten miles or so. I think the desolate stretches that we experienced in the first few weeks are now behind us.
Most riders were in Owatonna at the county fair grounds by early afternoon. I sensed a lethargy in myself and in the group as we lazed the afternoon away on our little spot of green. We all trouped over together to one restaurant, were seated at one table, and had slow service as a result. We’ve done this twice now, and have vowed to not let it happen again.
Shelley flew home today so now, my attention turns back to the ride. The afternoon in camp was very relaxed and social. Jeff, a recumbent rider came over with a trailer full of much needed parts for people to check out. Particularly mirrors have been casualties over the miles, and he had a nice stock. He even offered us Internet access, but we weren’t ready to post.
Tomorrow’s another longer day, and we have three centuries (100 miles plus) in the next six riding days before we get another rest day. I can safely say that people are resting and girding their loins for the next big push. Let’s see how we do!

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. These are new jerseys that we haven't worn before. Is anybody counting?

Zach is our rider of the day. Zach is a strong rider and getting faster by the day. He's a programmer by day and rider by summer. I owe a lot of this website design to his example.

This is the river next to New Ulm. I have no idea what the name is. This scene was on a closed to cars bridge just leaving town for highway 14. This is not corn, I repeat, we found a crop that's not corn. Actually, it's not a crop but a wetland with bullrushes.

Janesville is apparently quite proud to be named suchly. Allan is riding in past the sign and later told me he regretted not taking the picture. Here you go Allan. I loved this small business duo. The It's About Time" clock repair struck me particularly. I wonder how he stays in business in a small town?

Beth is rolling into Janesville here. They found a nice park to rest in that was full of mosquitoes. Camp at the County Fair grounds is almost mosquito free. Many naps were taken in camp this afternoon. Jessica happened to take one in front of my camera.

The email I'll use this summer is brucesherman@mac.com. Send mail to this address to say hello and I'll be able to read it on the ride.
