Billings, MT to Hardin, MT - 54 miles

Billings was barely awake when we rolled out this morning. The first order of business was climbing out of the Billings valley. This was accomplished after we rode out of town on a small 2-lane road that switch-backed up the hillside to the Crow Indian Reservation. It was a pleasant climb and I noticed that my legs seemed stronger than they did a week or two ago. Maybe I’m finally getting the hang of this.
At the rest stop on the top of the hill, Jeff talked with a Crow Indian who runs a wrestling camp and goes to Japan with the kids in the camp. He gave us his card, a T-shirt and brochure. He even suggested that we stop in at his place for breakfast in future years.
Today was an easy day with only 54 miles between Billings and Hardin. We would have ridden further, but there is no town for another 90 miles. We had a head wind much of the way today, but everyone noticed that we could still ride 15 or mores miles per hour, and that up a grade!
We all coasted into Hardin by noon or shortly after and some of us headed directly for the community pool. You’ll see the movie results below.
As we were riding across the lonely reaches of the Crow Reservation, the song Miles From Nowhere, by Cat Stevens kept going in my head. I enjoy singing on the bike when I have the breath, so I was singing too.
“Miles from nowhere,
Guess I’ll take my time,
Oh yeah. To reach there.”

Day 15 jersey is one that Scott and I were awarded years ago for raising over $2000.00 for the Kalispel to Calgary bike ride. The back is more interesting than the front, so we thought we'd turn around for this picture

Ash is one of the most interesting people on the ride. Originally from Uganda, of Indian origin, he now lives near Vancouver, B.C. He is the top fundraiser for this ride having raised over $28,000.00 (American) for the Big Ride. He's really funny, with a great sense of humor and a great addition to the ride.

Today was my day for a flat. We just had it fixed, and the valve stem tore out, so we had to start over. Since Scott installed the tube in the tire, we are appealing to the jury to decide if the second flat is attributed to me or to Scott. I'll let you know the result. These are the two trees that we saw today once we left Billings. Not surprisingly, one of our water stops was there under the tree. We could see them for miles away as we approached and specualted that they were incredibly tall.

In the picture above, Jessica carries two packs at once. She does this every day, managing to get all of her gear to the truck in one trip. I often find it amusing to watch. Today's helmet hair was so excellent that I thought it was worth a picture. I'm kind of going for the Squiggy (Laverne and Shirley) look, and I think I succeeded.

My J.P. Patches action figure gets some action with the bobble body hula doll on the back of Jeanette's bike. Who says there's no love on the Big Ride? Hardin had a very nice pool and community center. We swam and dove and hung in the hot pool for an hour or so after getting in.

The email I'll use this summer is brucesherman@mac.com. Send mail to this address to say hello and I'll be able to read it on the ride.
