Where the propeller shaft goes through the hull, it enters an oil lubricated bearing. On either end of the bearing is a seal. The seal on the seawater side keeps the water separate from the oil in the bearing. Shown here is the seal on the Engine Room side. We replace these seals whenever we take the ship out of the water. The seal is the black rubber piece. The machine on top of the seal is a heater used to help bond the ends of the seal together.
