There are many openings in a ships hull which provide ingress or egress for water used by the vessel. Many of these openings have a sort of box built against the hull, called a seachest. The pipes or equipment inside the ship have pipes connected to these seachests and draw water from them. The seachest openings have covers like the one above to protect them from sucking in fish and debris in the water.
