The ship rests on hundreds of blocks like these. They are made of wood, but weighted down with iron to keep them from floating when the dock is flooded. Every ship has a drydock plan specifying where the blocks are located and how many are needed to support the ship. The locations are moved slightly for every shipyard so that unpainted areas can be painted.
