Middle School Life Science

During this unit the students will study the group of organisms known as Protists. The students will study the basis of their classification, their characteristics, their structures and their functions. We will look at how these organisms interact with man and note their commercial and industrial use.

The students will be loooking at Amoeba, Paramecium, Stentor, Euglena, Volvox, and Spyrogyra as representatives of their various taxanomic groups. In an effort to learn about the structures and functions of these organisms the students will observe both living and prepared specimins. Students will have access to not only compound microscopes but also ProScopes® combined with a relay lens so that digital movie clips can be produced. Using digital video editing software, the students will annotate and narrate their movie clips in order to demonstrate their understanding. Instructions, outlining the target organelles in each organism will be provided.

Representing student understanding through pencil drawings has had shortcomings, especially for non-artistic students, now the field is level.

Digital Video Protist Lab

We are really excited to be able to use this great technology. We were never happy when students struggled to show their new knowledge. Technology is helping every student to shine.

Our Protist study unit tends to fall in the end of our second quarter or the beginning of the third.

During the Protist Microscope Lab, students will observe a variety of representative species. For each specimin, the student will produce a short video clip or a hand drawn sketch to represent their understanding of the structures of these organisms, depending on their preference. Students will work in teams to producce the video clips.
