Training for January 24

Today was supposed to be an easy run of 20 minutes warmup and 70 minutes of running. The streets had snow piled high, but Commonwealth Ave. had only an inch or so of slush so I stayed on that street and ran to the Firehouse to BC and back to City Hall. More on these landmarks later, but suffice it to say they are all well known spots on the Marathon course. I started my run at 8pm and finished about 930pm and ran 9.58 miles.

Running in the dark on snowy streets can be difficult, and you always wonder how well you are seen by the traffic. When I run around midnight, there are few cars out, but traffic is significant during the evening hours. You can see from this picture the vest that I wear when out at night. It has SOLAS approved tape that I've added to the front and the back. In addition, my gloves and shoes also have reflective surfaces. Carol and I tested this vest at night using a flashlight- she was able to see the stripes with the small flashlight over a quarter of a mile away. I bought my tape on line at a place called Identi-tape. They have all kinds of reflective tapes, including colored reflective tapes, that would be great to add onto kid's costums to make them safer.
