Interactive Bridge Sites On The Internet

Please assist us in keeping this web page updated
by letting us know about other interactive and online sites

There are many Bridge Players who do not have the opportunity to play in the Bridge Clubs. Their schedule does not allow them to get off from work, get into the car, drive those ten miles, and sit down at the Bridge Table, and be expected to be in a relaxed mood. The stress of the day has a great effect on the bidding and play, just as an upset stomach does.

Following are several Internet Bridge sites where the Bridge Player can sit at home, and play bridge while at the keyboard. These Bridge Players can schedule a game at their own convenience, can still have fun playing, and actually earn International Match Points.

Please take the time to look at the individual sites and then take your pick. We are requesting the viewer to aid us in completing this list. If you know of any Interactive Bridge Sites, please drop us a note with the corresponding address and we shall include it. Trying to keep up is almost impossible, but with your help, we can certainly try. And if the visitor discovers that the URL has changed, please contact us.

WorldWinner To Acquire E-Bridge; Partners With ThirdAge

By Marine Cole 8/12/2004
VentureWire

WorldWinner Inc., which provides online game competitions, said it has agreed to acquire e-bridge Inc., an online entertainment site for bridge enthusiasts, in a stock transaction.

The terms of the deal, which is to close within two to three weeks, weren't disclosed.

"It's a great complement as it helps us continue our revenue growth," said Stephen Killeen, president and chief executive of WorldWinner. The acquisition will also allow WorldWinner to expand its user base, which is mostly made of women over 40 years old, who play online tournaments. "Our space is generally older, and e-bridge plays right into our existing demography."

In separate news, WorldWinner also said that it has signed a partnership with ThirdAge Inc., an online media and direct marketing company focused on serving the aging baby-boomer market.

E-bridge is a profitable company and is backed by Pinhas Romik Gesfid, a Swiss-based venture capital fund; Technorov, an Israel-based venture capital fund; and a group of private U.S.-based investors.

E-bridge offers card games including bridge, and some thousands of tournaments a year. WorldWinner will acquire a majority of e-bridge's employees, and Killeen said that there won't be any layoffs. It will also keep the acquired company's offices in Tel Aviv. Pinhas Romik, founder and chief executive of e-bridge, will remain with the company as a vice president.

E-bridge will be consolidated into WorldWinner, but the brand name will be kept. WorldWinner currently has a user base of about 12 million, while e-bridge brings about tens of thousand users to WorldWinner. E-bridge members will have access to bridge tournaments through e-bridge's Web site as well as through WorldWinner's.

E-bridge was founded in 2000 as a community portal for bridge games and information. E-bridge players can participate in tournaments and also be eligible to earn American Contract Bridge League master points and World Bridge Federation master points.

WorldWinner will also acquire e-bridge's proprietary hearts and spades tournament platform, extending the company's game tournament offerings.

Asked if the company plans to accomplish other acquisitions, Killeen said that "we're always doing what it takes to strengthen our business."

WorldWinner has raised $23 million to date. In May 2002, it raised over $9 million in a third round of financing from Benchmark Capital, Common Angels, HarbourVest Partners and Zero Stage Capital. The Newton, Mass.-based company has been profitable for about a quarter. Killeen said that WorldWinner's revenue went up 46% since last year.

WorldWinner - WorldWinner is the leading global provider of online games for cash and prizes, where the outcome of each competition is determined by the player's skill. As a tournament provider, WorldWinner brings together people who love to play games and thrive on the thrill of competing, allowing them to demonstrate their ability in tournaments for free, or match wits against opponents for cash and prizes. Many of the popular games played on WorldWinner and its partner sites have attracted a timeless following in the offline community, such as chess, bridge, solitaire and 9-ball pool. Now they can be enjoyed online by millions whenever the need for friendly competition strikes.

The notice of cessation to the subscribers occured on or before September 29, 2006, and stated:

It offers a rich playing experience, complemented by classrooms and tools for teachers, a library consisting of all the scored boards for the previous week, a detailed convention card application and a viewer for all the games ever played on a player's computer. The club structure is unique, each room consisting of exactly eight tables. This allows for hourly tournaments in certain rooms and for a new form of synchronized bridge in other rooms (where all eight tables play the same board in a set period of time). Team play is supported both socially and competitively (on a ladder). A large set of options is available to the table host: privacy level, game type (MP, IMP, rubber, Chicago), seat reservations, level of play (only players with a certain rating or percentile may be seated). When you sit at a competitive table, you have a clear picture of the expertise level at that table: the club is based on a strong rating system for both individual players and for participating pairs. Participation in the rating system is optional. When a player has connection problems, the table is notified and if the problem is severe, the seat in question becomes reserved. On reconnect, the player can claim the reserved seat.

Boards and scores will be free depending on authors. The authors will decide whether we can use them for free. As stated by the authors and webmasters Todi Gantar from Slovenia and John-Hallvard Skoglund from Norway: "Bidding Quest is an online bidding site where you can practice bidding 'live' or 'Round by Round'. We have also a bidding contest for all to join. Bidding Quest started 1997 when (Mr.) Woodgrove started a bidding contest called Bidding Challenge on his Website Bridge Arkade. The bidding was done by email, and (Mr.) Wodgrove had to update all manually. Bidding set 1-17 was made for this purpose, and it become very popular. In fact it became so much work, that it was impossible to find time for it, so in 1999 the contest was closed. Then Todi Gantar got an idea of making a bidding tool with WebPages so that he could practice bidding with his partner online. He got help from Dule to make database controlled WebPages. Since he hadn’t copyright to any bidding sets with score, he found (Mr.) Woodgroves WebPage and they started to cooperate. The Bidding Quest site was started in August 2001. Curently, January 2007, we are making a new window platform.

A version that supports single-dummy play, where two hands are hidden, is planned for the future.

Floater - Available for both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh computers, the software application has been developed by Tom Holub and Andrei Caraman. the idea is to allow people to play against people via the Internet. Retained only as historical information: Set up by Microsoft, and caution is advised due to some imperfections still to be worked out. The site offers many games to play and there are many players at one time. Bridge is also offered. You may have to do some site-navigation, download a certain plug-in and software, and click on a few items before you get to the game of Bridge. With so many games to choose from, the program can become a little slow. Microsoft asks you to report any bugs you may encounter. Some of the advantages to this interactive bridge site follows:

1. Alerts will allow for commentary and explanations on each bid.
2. Claims allow for a user to state that they have the rest of the tricks, and if everyone agrees, the hand is laid down. This improves the speed of the game and mimics real card play.
3. Duplicate scoring, both IMP and matchpoint, will be available. This is one of the features most requested by current Zone Bridge players.
4. Set game scoring will also be an option. Duplicate scoring will allow you to compare your score for a particular deal against other players, getting an instant assessment of your skills.
5. Deals can be saved and reviewed offline. This feature will greatly help in understanding and studying the game and will give you an opportunity to play better. If you save a deal and blow it while playing online on the Zone, review the deal later and find your mistakes.
6. Convention cards will be fully implemented.
7. Full range of hosting options will be accessible for the game's host.

Please be aware of the fact that individual online members may have developed their own abbreviations and they have been adopted by an individual online group and may therefore not correspond to another online group.
