Bulletins

A Bulletin is defined as:

Bridge Bulletins are a means of communicating information about bridge-related information and events as presented in a written format or on the Internet in 'zeros and ones'. The sponsoring bodies for sanctioned and licensed bridge were among the first institutions and organizations, which realized the potential for this newly invented medium, and employed it for the benefit of its members.

Note: In the beginning of employing the computer as an additional instrument in bringing the results faster, quicker, and more rapidly correctionable to the participating players the designations for such new innovations had to be decided and established. These first reportings were designated sometimes as Issue, Volume, Number, and summarily Bulletin was chosen as the most suitable and applicable term. The attempt has been made to keep to the original version until the term became standard.

The Internet was born and offered as a mass-consumption product globally, it is reported, in the early 1990s. The history of the evolution of the Internet is interesting and we leave it to the reader to educate himself. However, the computer as such was a very successful instrument before this date and its use made life of the bridge directors and tournament directors and tournament organizers much easier, especially in calculating the scores. Until the introduction of this tool, all hand records had to be calculated and tallied by hand, which took sometimes weeks, if not months.

When the idea or concept of providing this information to the bridge community, to the participating bridge players, was conceived is a matter of history. That it happened is only owing to the foresight of a few. The endeavor was a challenge and also trial and error. These computer pioneers, reporters, writers, journalists, and members of the IBPA Press are to be congratulated and applauded for their crucial, definitive, determinative, and history-making decision. Named in particular are Chyah Burchard (USA), Niels Wendell Pedersen (Denmark), Hans van Staveren (The Netherlands) and Ivan Calame (Switzerland). Their time, their efforts, their endeavor, and their struggle should neither remain unrecorded nor unnoticed, nor that of all others involved and who participated in this evolution.

It was only later that the sponsoring bodies for sanctioned and licensed bridge, such as the ACBL, the EBL, the WBF, and others were offered the capability of transmitting images, first in black and white, and then in color. This information was then preserved and archived on the Internet in the form of Bulletins, which covered the daily procedures at bridge events, nationally and internationally.

We offer a list of such Bulletins below as found on the Internet, the medium employed. We believe that they should be preserved and archived for future reference. Unfortunately, the requirements of the Internet in the early years demanded that the images be separate, added seperately, and sent seperately. This means that some of the images in the very early Bulletins will be omitted. In some instances some Bulletins are not available: (N/A). In some instances the images lack a certain clarity.
