Whitehead Trophy

The Whitehead Trophy was donated in 1930 by Mr. Wilbur C. Whitehead of New York, who was a great bridge authority and a member of the team that won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1928, the first year it was in play.

1928
1-2. Ralph Richards, Gratz Scott, Edwin Wetzlar, Wilbur Whitehead;

1-2. Abraham Brown, Mrs. Sidney Lovell, Caroline Taylor, Nils Wester

Mr. Wilbur Whitehead, born in 1866 and died in 1931 was President of the Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held such a fascination for him that he retired from business in 1910 to devote his life to the game of bridge or Whist as it was known at that time of the evolution of the game. He was the inventor of many bidding and play conventions, the Quick-Trick Table of Card Values, the Whitehead system of requirements for original bids and responses and the Whitehead Table of Preferential Leads.

Mr. Wilbur Whitehead was instrumental in standardizing procedures in auction bridge and later in contract bridge.

During the 1910s he was living in France, where he wrote his first book, Royal Spades. A second book was published in London in 1913. His first book to appear in America was Whitehead's Convention of Auction Bridge in 1914.

The Whitehead Trophy was played at the North American Championship Women's Pairs and the contest was held annually at the Summer North American Bridge Championships until 1962. This was changed in that year and subsequently contested at the Spring North American Bridge Championships.

The Whitehead Trophy is contested as a Women's Pairs event for partnerships consisting of two female players. There are two qualifying sessions, followed by two final sessions.
