The event was first played in Venice in 1974, and continued in Monte Carlo in 1976, as a challenge between champion women's teams of Europe, in each case Italy and the United States.
It became a World Championship in 1978, and the earlier events were retroactively recognized. Further events were played in 1981 and 1985, and subsequently bienially alongside the Bermuda Bowl. A new format was introduced in 1991 with an increased number of teams. Four teams from Europe. Three teams from North America. One team from the South Pacific and the Host Country. Two teams from each other Zone. Two groups of eight played a double-round robin, with four teams from each advancing to the quarter-final play-offs.
