British Gold Cup Trophy

The British Gold Cup, or as it is better known, the BBL Gold Cup, was first played in the year 1931. It is one of the oldest, continuous Bridge Competition in the world and some of the greatest names in the game of bridge in England have participated in this event.

British Bridge League was the official British Bridge League Web Site and contained entry forms and general information about the BBL and the major European and World Championships, results of BBL Tournaments and Championships together with any other details. Much of the information from this Website appears now on Ecats Bridge. The British Bridge League devolved into its constituent Unions on 31 December 1999, and this site no longer exists.

Bridge Great Britian Gold Cup

However, the British Bridge League has decided to discontinue the British Gold Cup as it is now known and rename it as of January 1, 2000, the 2000 Gold Cup. This event will be directed by Bridge Great Britain, which is a new organization and which has been selected to continue the event as well as the British Home Internationals and the British Simultaneous Pairs.

The Gold Cup is the most prestigious Open Teams event in Britain, and is organised by Bridge Great Britain (formerly the British Bridge League). It is knock-out throughout, and, prior to the quarter-finals, all matches are played privately. Matches are of 32-boards in Rounds I and II (or 40 by mutual agreement), increasing to 48 boards thereafter and 64 boards for the quarter-finals onwards.

The Winners of the BBL Gold Cup, or the British Gold Cup, are listed below. It must be noted that in the first developing years, the event ran through December to January, from one year to the next, and this is noted in the column for the years. This was the case until 1948. Special mention must be made of Mr. Boris Schapiro, who first won the competition in 1945 and until his last win in 1998, Mr. Boris Schapiro had won the event eleven times.
