WHIRLWIND CONVENTION

The origin of this conventional method, employed after a strong 1 Club Opening, is unknown and the convention itself cannot be substantiated, verified or supported by any possessed written material. However, this conventional method has been brought to our attention and we would prefer to present this information rather than withhold it from our visitors.

This conventional method is employed by the defense after one opponent has opened the auction with an opening of a strong 1 Club. The defense mechanism is outlined in the schematic below:

Double This overcall promises a strong hand, either in values or in distribution.
1 1. Promises Diamonds and Hearts and a competitive hand or
2. Diamonds and Clubs and additional values. Subsequent rebids clarify the holding.
1 1. Promises Hearts and Spades and a competitive hand or
2. Spades and Hearts and additional values. Subsequent rebids clarify the holding.
1 1. Promises Spades and Clubs and a competitive hand or
2. Spades and Hearts with additional values. Subsequent rebids clarify the holding.
1 NT This is a preemptive overcall promising a single-suiter to be named via subsequent bids.
2 1. Promises Clubs and Diamonds and a competitive hand or
2. Clubs and Spades with additional values. Subsequent rebids clarify the holding.
2 Promises Diamonds and Spades.
2 Promises Clubs and Hearts
2 Promises a good suit in Spades.
3 Promises a good suit in Clubs.
3 Promises a good suit in Diamonds.
3 Promises a good suit in Hearts.

The responses are dependent on the overcall and can differ per partnership agreement. If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
