Extended Stayman

The origin of this variation of the Stayman convention is unknown. The concept is based on the idea of showing the strength of the opener on the second round of the auction. Once the asking bid of 2 Clubs, or Stayman, has been bid by the responder, then the opener will communicate the possession or non-possession of a 4-card Major suit plus minimum or maximum values of the No Trump opening with the following rebids:

Opener

Responder

  Meaning

1 NT

2

  Extended Stayman

2

Shows minimum values and both 4-card Major suits.

2

Shows minimum values and a 4-card Heart suit. Denies a 4-card Spade suit.

2

Shows minimum values and a 4-card Spade suit. Denies a 4-card Heart suit.

2 NT

Shows minimum values and denies a 4-card Major suit.

3

Shows maximum values and denies a 4-card Major suit.

3

Shows maximum values and both 4-card Major suits.

3

Shows maximum values and a 4-card Heart suit. Denies a 4-card Spade suit.

3

Shows maximum values and a 4-card Spade suit. Denies a 4-card Heart suit.

Once the responder is aware of the strength of the No Trump opening plus the inferred distribution, then the responder can continue the auction accordingly. If the opener shows both 4-card Major suits, with a 2 or with 3 rebid, then the responder can make a transfer. If the responder rebids 2, then this is a transfer to Spades. If the responder rebids 2, then this is a transfer to Hearts. In this manner the stronger partner still becomes the declarer and the lead comes up to him. However, it is the responsibility of the responder to place the final contract, whether partscore, game, or slam.
