Bridge Blogs

Bridge Blogs - Weblogs

There is a medium for bridge correspondence on the Internet, which is becoming more and more popular. The individual player has the ability to post personal bridge-related experiences on the Internet in the form of a weblog, and which is accessible to the general public.

In order to discover the fascination of this medium, any bridge player can visit the following, or other and similar, websites on the web and find out how to begin a blog: Beginner's Guide to Blogs.

Terminology is often confusing and several of the used terms are listed below with definitions, which may or may not have evolved into something newer, more advanced. It is important to remember even in the world of software that the wise man did state that "progress is change" and that "evolution will not stand still".

Blog definition: A blog is a frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links. A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger at blogger.com. Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process.

Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs. However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.

Audiocasting definition: Audiocasting is also designated as streaming audio. This is a one-way audio transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as private intranets to deliver audio on demand or an audio broadcast (Internet radio). Unlike sound files (WAV, MP3, etc.) that are played after they are downloaded, streaming audio is played within a few seconds of requesting it, and the data is not stored permanently in the computer. If the streaming audio is broadcast live, then it may be called "realtime audio." However, technically, realtime means no delays, and there is a built-in delay in streaming audio.

Podcasting definition: Podcasting, created by former MTV VJ Adam Curry, is a term that was devised as a crisp way to describe the technology used to push audio content from websites down to consumers of that content, who typically listen to it on their iPod (hence the "pod") or other audio player that supports mp3 at their convenience. The term podcasting is meant to rhyme with broadcasting and is a derivative of the iPod platform. While not directly associated with Apples iPod device or iTunes music service, the company did contribute both the desire and the technology for this capability.

Podcasting is not unlike time-shifted video software and devices like TiVo, which let you watch what you want when you want by recording and storing video, except that podcasting is used for audio and is currently free of charge. Note, however, that this technology can be used to push any kind of file, including software updates, pictures, and videos.

Screencast definition: Origin of the designation: In 2004, columnist Jon Udell invited readers of his blog to propose names for the emerging genre. Udell selected the term screencast, which was proposed by both Joseph McDonald and Deeje Cooley.A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, often containing audio narration. Although the term screencast dates from 2004, products such as Lotus ScreenCam were used as early as 1993. Early products produced large files and had limited editing features. More recent products support more compact file formats such as Macromedia Flash and have more sophisticated editing features allowing changes in sequence, mouse movement, and audio. Just as a screenshot is a picture of a user's screen, a screencast is essentially a movie of what a user sees on their monitor. Screencasts are useful for demonstrating software features.

Video Podcast definition: Video podcast (sometimes shortened to vidcast or vodcast) is a term used for the online delivery of video on demand video clip content via Atom or RSS enclosures. The term is an evolution specialized for video, coming from the generally audio-based podcast and referring to the distribution of video where the RSS feed is used as a non-linear TV channel to which consumers can subscribe using a PC, TV, set-top box, media center or mobile multimedia device).

Following are several bridge-related blogs already established on the web. Any reader or visitor wishing to add any bridge-related blogs or weblogs to this list are welcomed. Your input and information would be greatly appreciated. However, please do remember that Bridge Forums and Bulletin Boards are different mediums and do not belong on this list.

Podzinger

PodZinger is the world's most powerful audio and video search engine and online advertising network - aka EveryZing. Using speech recognition technology, PodZinger searches words within both audio and video, not just the metadata, to classify content based on topic and usage. For consumers, PodZinger is the only search engine that allows users to find audio and video content based on keyword searches and then skim the results for relevance the same way they would for text. Consumers can then "jump-to" a specific location in the audio and video without fast forwarding or listening to the entire file.

Bridge Blogging - bridgeblogging.com is a community of Master Point Press authors and other bridge writers commenting regularly on the bridge scene as well as their latest triumphs and disasters.

Mastering Bridge - Welcome to Mastering Bridge - your online bridge community of bridge teachers and bridge players.

The following Bloggers contribute to the Bridge Blogging site of Master Point Press and have their personal address. They are listed alphabetically by first name:

Barbara Seagram - Barbara Seagram owns and manages one of the largest bridge schools in Toronto, where she teaches hundreds of students every year to enjoy bridge. She has been awarded ‘master teacher’ status by the American Bridge Teachers Association. She is also a highly regarded bridge author

Becky - I have been an intern at Master Point Press since July, 2008. I spend a good deal of time on bridgeblogging.com, mostly helping our bloggers troubleshoot technical issues, or setting them up with new accounts. I’m not a bridge player (yet!).

Bob Mackinnon - Robert F. MacKinnon is a retired mathematician who admits to a life-long love of Japanese culture. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia, and when not writing spends his time sailing and playing bridge. His stories and articles have appeared in Bridge Plus and BRIDGE magazines, and in the ACBL Bulletin.

Bobby Wolff - Bobby Wolff (Las Vegas) is one of the all-time great American bridge players. He started winning world championships in the 1960s with the famous Dallas Aces. Since then he has accumulated 11 world titles, 10 silver and bronze medals in world play, and over 30 national titles.

Cameron French - Cam French is a teacher, mentor, former certified director/club proprietor and writer of the game. He has been published in The Bridge World, The Kibitzer and community newspapers. He has not accrued multiple victories in Regional or National events, but claims to be friends with a few who have. He is more of a student of the game than a tournament professional.

Colin Lee - Colin represented Canada in 1995 in Ghent Belgium in the World Junior Pairs and was the youth pair championship - finishing #19th overall and #1 for Pairs under 20 years old. He also represented Canada twice in the World Junior Team championships in 1997 and 1999 finishing 7th and 11th respectively. Colin Lee is the technical guru behind Master Point Press and BridgeBlogging.com and has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Waterloo - which definitely can help at the bridge table as well as in checking probabilities in bridge books and articles.

Dan Romm - Dan Romm, from Seattle, Washington, is a successful businessman whose hobby for more than forty years has been winning at high stakes bridge against the very best players.

James Howick - My names is James Howick. I’ve just started working here at Masterpoint Press. I’ve never played bridge before, but I’m looking forward to learning. I just moved to Toronto with my wife, and we have a stellar apartment on the 20th floor overlooking Lake Ontario. Looking forward to talking with all of you.

Judy Kay-Wolff - Judy Kay-Wolff, a Diamond Life Master, is no stranger to the tournament scene and has the distinction of being married to two Hall of Famers. She was wed to the late international star, Norman Kay, for nearly forty years and is presently married to eleven-time world Champion, former Dallas Ace, Bobby Wolff. A Philadelphian by birth, Judy who now resides in Las Vegas, has enjoyed many phases of our game spanning five decades - player, administrator, charity game organizer and amateur musical bridge show writer and director. However, she boasts as her greatest achievement the pursuit of The Lone Wolff to its conclusion. Judy happened upon it on a dusty shelf in Bobby’s apartment in 2003 where he had abandoned his half-finished epic begun in 1995 and she proudly takes full credit for allying Bobby and his manuscript with Ray Lee and Master Point Press.

Linda Lee - Linda Lee is co-owner of Master Point Press, the world’s leading publisher of books on bridge. After a lengthy absence from women’s bridge, Linda won back-to-back Canadian Women’s Teams titles in 2004 and 2005, and represented Canada in the Women’s World Championship in each of those years as well as in 2007. She is a WBF World International Master and has co-authored several bridge books including Beginning Bridge with Barbara Seagram and the Practice Your Bidding series with Barbara Seagram and Andy Stark.

Luise Lee - Luise Lee has been exposed to bridge in various forms all her life, but only started seriously studying the game in the fall of 2008. This blog is dedicated to recording her journey as she grows and developes her skills as a bridge player.

Mark Blumenthal

Mark Horton - Mark Horton, from London, England, is an internationally known player and journalist, with more than a dozen books to his credit, including Misplay These Hands with Me and Bridge Master vs. Bridge Amateur. He is editor of BRIDGE magazine in the United Kingdom.

Mike Yuen - A long time member of the IBPA International Bridge Press Association. This is my first attempt at writing a blog.

Nick Fahrer - Nick has spent all his life in Sydney and is the proprietor of The Bridge Shop, one of only a handful of stores in the world that specialise in contract bridge. A self-confessed bridge-junkie, he comes from a bridge playing family, married a bridge player and is the father to one caddy and a would-be caddy. His fondest bridge moment occurred when his wife Linda was selected for the Australian team.

Professor Silver - David Silver’s bridge writings have appeared in the New York Times, BRIDGE Magazine, Australian Bridge and the American Contract Bridge League Bulletin, and he was a regular contributor to Canadian Master Point magazine. He teaches English at a community college in Toronto, Canada. His other books include Tales out of School, and A Study in Silver.

Ray Lee - Ray Lee has been playing and writing about bridge for more years than he cares to remember. He conducted a regular column in the Toronto Star in the 1970s, has been editor (and sometimes founder) of several bridge magazines) and contributes to bridge publications around the world on a sporadic basis. As founder and publisher of Master Point Press, he is the proud purveyor of almost 150 different books on bridge, some of which are even worth reading. Playing with with his wife Linda, he can claim to have achieved second place in a number of prestigious bridge events, including the National Mixed Pairs. They are still the only pair to have scored over 75% in a Continent-Wide game and not have won it overall.

Roy Hughes - Roy Hughes is the author of several bridge books including Canada’s Bridge Warriors, which won the IBPA Book of the Year award for 2007. His first book, Building a Bidding System, was runner-up for the IBPA Book of the Year in 2005, and his second book, Card By Card, was nominated for the 2006 award. Roy lives in Toronto, Canada.

Sally Sparrow - Sally Sparrow joined Master Point Press in July 2008 as their Editorial and Marketing Assistant. She is new to the world of bridge, despite the fact that her mother (Maggie Sparrow) is a Star Bridge Teacher.
