ACOL 4 NO TRUMP OPENING

This is a special and specialized opening bid, which asks partner directly how many Aces he holds. There is no question that the opener has at least sufficient playing tricks to make slam, and is asking partner to tell him whether he has any Aces or not. If the partner does hold a specific Ace, then the opener could bid a grand slam. The responses inform the opener about the number of Aces and the location of the Aces. A typical holding would be:

Opener
A
KQJ965
AKQJ53
4 No Trump

Responses of the Partner to 4 No Trump are:

5 : Shows no Ace
5 : Shows the Ace of Diamonds
5 : Shows the Ace of Hearts
5 : Shows the Ace of Spades
5 NT: Shows Two Aces, unspecified
6 : Shows the Ace of Clubs

This is the entire opening with the corresponding responses by the partner. The employment of this particular conventional method should only be utilized when the holding shows only one Losing Trick and the opener is only interested in the number and location of possibly held Aces.
