scalloping

There are a few small stalactites in the roof of the cave, but the most interesting shapes are formed in the limestone rock by the water flowing through the cave. Round indentations, called scallop marks decorate the walls, the roof is comparitively smooth, while the floor of the main passage has deep potholes.

Black Keld must lie at or nearly at the base of the limestone. Some have argued that this part of the cave may be comparitively young and that a higher level resurgence once existed before the valley was downcut. If this could be found it might provide a dry way in to the cave. However at this stage of exploration it remains hard to make any precise predictions!
