Limestone pavement above Conistone in Wharfedale. The landscape is not as natural as it seems. Once all these hills were covered by trees, but changing climate and the activities of man have totally changed the countryside. Timber was cut for fuel and construction, fields were cleared for sheep and cattle. Now a few stunted survivors struggle in the wind as the young trees are eaten by sheep and rabbits. |
