By the beginning of January 2000 Black Keld had an explored length of more than 1.5 kilometres. The limit of exploration was 300 metres into Sump 5.

Black Keld goes under the front lawn of Scargill house.

On the 22nd January 2000 Phil Murphy and Brian Judd made the first dive of the year in Black Keld. Snow had melted during the week, visibility underwater was poor and the water felt cold. A few shocks were provided by trout which kept swimming blindly into the divers, as the fish were paniced by the lights and activity.

The line through the squeeze after Lake 1 had been swept off course, but familiarity with the dive meant that it was quickly rearranged. Once through the crawl at the end of sump 2, it was a matter of wading in the waist deep water upstream to sump 3, trying to avoid the potholes and underwater obstacles.
