Obstacles

Access to Black Keld Is Not Allowed!

There are a number of obstacles to overcome when attempting to explore Black Keld.

The main obstacle to cave diving at Black Keld, is the poor visibility in peat stained water, making route-finding difficult. Black Keld is aptly named! The underwater passages are large and/or complicated. The correct way forward can be hard to find. In addition, relatively small amounts of rainfall can effect the flow through the cave and make diving dangerous or impossible.

You too could be a fashion victim....
The cold temperature of the water is also becoming an issue, especially as the dives are becoming longer. The divers are still using semi dry suits, because it is thought the constrictions are too tight to wear protection over 'dry' suits and probable that dry suits would be ripped without it - better to withstand the cold than risk complete catastrophe. (If a dry suit ripped there would be loss of bouyancy, but more importantly, the diver would be completely without thermal protection. The cold water would quickly cause hypothermia and possibly death.)

As luck would have it some of the best visibility is when the water is coldest.
