Phil Murphy joined the Phil Howson and Brian Judd in the Summer of 1997 and more discoveries followed.

The new discoveries were surveyed and included a side passage off the main route, which contained two more sumps. One sump was static and clear and the other 'active' and peaty brown. However, the main focus was to push on with the main passage, which contained more sumps.

Main Passage before sump 3

Passage leading to Sump 3.

It wasn't easy to pass these and several dives were needed before Phil Howson passed Sumps 3 and 4 in the Autumn of 1997.

Sump 5 proved to be larger and more confusing. At one stage the line was laid through a small tubular oxbow, but a bypass was later found to this in the larger passage.

By the beginning of the year 2000, the explored cave had reached one and a half kilometres and the line reel was 300 metres into Sump 5.
