Phil Howson's nickname of 'Polyfilla' was earned when he joined cavers of the University of Leeds Speleological Association while at Leeds Polytechnic. (Part of some peculiar initiation - Brian Judd was known as 'Barmy Brian' - can't think why.) Phil Howson soon proved himself an enthusiastic and capable caver and diver. It was while accompanying Phil to dive the Poseidon sump in Langcliffe that Brian suggested they look again at Black Keld. (Anything to get out of crawling and stooping for kilometres carrying diving cylinders and wearing a full divers wetsuit.) |
