Langcliffe entrance

The entrance to Langcliffe Pot on Great Whernside in early Spring 2000. A hole down through limestone slabs leads to a 27 metre pitch (a drop). Langcliffe Pot is currently 9.6 kilometres in length and was first explored by the Craven Pothole Club in 1936 and 1954. The main explorations were made by the Yorkshire Underground Research Team in 1968 and by the University of Leeds Speleological Association from 1968 to 1972. Since then many cavers have attempted to get further; through boulder chokes, climbing and by diving the two sumps (flooded passages) and deploying camps underground. So far these efforts have met with limited success.
