Recent discoveries in Black Keld, consisting of underwater and dry passages, have taken the length of the known cave to over two kilometres. Yet based on what is known of the hydrology, geology and cave development in the area, much of the Black Keld cave system remains undiscovered. What will eventually be found has generated fierce speculation and debate from cavers and scientists.

Early in June 2000, heavy rainfall caused the worst flood from Black Keld seen in fifteen years. Water spewed from the resurgence, rose above the banks of the Keld and flowed directly across the fields to the River Wharfe. In the process large quantities of sand were shifted through the cave and seventy sheep were washed away in nearby fields. It was a dramatic indication of the amount of water flowing into the Black Keld cave system
