High water conditions make diving impossible at Black Keld. Even moderate rainfall can cause high flow conditions at Black Keld, because the catchment area on Great Whernside is so large. Naturally more rain falls on higher ground and this can deceive those living at lower altitudes or in other districts. We travel in hope, but unfortunately more often than not we can only watch the black peaty water issuing forth. |
