| Just as the riverside scenery started to become more spectacular, we had to get off at Fengjie, to begin the road journey up into the mountains.

Professor Zhu hired porters to carry our bags up the steps from the river. I could hardly lift my rucsack, but the porters carried six at a time while smoking a cigarette! | |
| As we drove away from Fengjie we saw barges being loaded by men running down the banks of the river laden with baskets of coal. Other men on high stools were counting how many baskets of coal each man loaded.

It was human labour on an enormous scale. I felt extremely grateful and a little shame faced to be so privileged while they toiled in the heat.
