Governor Proposing Graduate Student Fees Increase

The Outrage; The Ramifications

As if I hadn't already had enough of the elitist GOP agenda, it really knocked me down today. My friend said she was reading right wing puppet boy Schwarzenegger's proposal for raising graduate student fees again. This year fees are around $7,500. Next year, the proposal could boost fees beyond $10,000. Given that we only earn $15,000 per year as teaching assistant's and subsidized loans max out at $8,500, many people will not be able to pay the tuition. How does the puppet boy propose we pay these fees? Perhaps he's going to donate his salary to graduate students in California next year?

I'm thinking about the ramifications of these increases. Only the students with family support or high income spouses can pay for graduate school. The ultimate effect is the pool of applicants and graduating scholars will have less diversity. The first level effect seems economic and linked to social class. However, given the number of racial minorities disproportionately represented among the working class and poor, the diversity will be both class based and racial. The picture that's evoked in my mind hearkens back to the days before civil rights!
