Quick Start to READ 180 Scholastic Management Suite

Accessing Special Features

Generating Reports

The most important thing to remember with this program is to never have the management suite open while any component of Read 180 is in use. (Such as students using Read 180, SRI, Reading Counts.) It is best to only open the management suite at the beginning or end of a school day.

• As soon as you are finished with the management suite, exit the program. Never leave it open for a long period of time.
• Students should always exit the program they are working in before shutting their computer down or logging off.
• Not doing the above things may cause corruption in the database and you may not be able to access it for up to 24 hours.

When I exit the Management Suite it asks me if I want to run the maintenance program and I have the option to select “Cancel” or “OK”, which should I choose?

  • You should select "Cancel". If you choose “OK”, this will run the maintenance program and will take several hours.
  • If you accidentally select “OK” and restart the computer before it finishes, you will not be able to access the Management Suite for up to 24 hours.
  • (Your technology facilitator may designate someone to run this maintenance once a week or they may do it for your campus.)

My student Paul O'Reilly, Jr. won't be recognized by READ 180. Why?

  • READ 180 will not recognize the comma character. Please edit the student record and remove the comma.

My students are receiving a message stating, "You need to pick out a different topic CD." or "Please insert the Topic Cd" Why?

  • These messages appear because the incorrect Topic CD is in the CD drive.
  • Determine the current Topic CD for each student that receives this message by opening the edit student screen and clicking on the Read 180 Status button.
  • The current Topic CD appears at the top of the window.
  • Make sure that the student has entered this Topic CD in the CD drive when starting the program

I've noticed that students with names that contain a middle initial cannot login. Why?

  • Students MUST use their middle initial to login if their student profile in the SMS contains their middle initial. I
  • If the initial has been capitalized, then the student must enter it that way.
  • The same holds true for lowercase initials
  • We suggest that you do not enter student names with middle initials in the management suite.

What will happen if a student logs in on two different computers at the same time?

  • While we definitely discourage allowing a student to log in to two different computers, this may happen occasionally.
  • When it does, one of the computers will experience an error that brings the computer back to the desktop, and the student must restart READ 180.
  • If this happens, find the computer that currently has the student logged in, and encourage the student to continue working there

My student selected a Topic CD, but needs to change to a different one. When I skip the Topic CD, it marks the CD as completed, which it isn't. How can I do this?

  1. Login to the Scholastic Management Suite.
  2. Select the student and click Edit, or double-click the student's name.
  3. Select READ 180 from the "Select a Program" drop down menu.
  4. Click on the "Student Status" button.
  5. Click the SKIP button, then click YES to the following question, then click OK.
  6. Instruct the student to begin another Topic CD.
  7. Repeat steps 1-3
  8. Uncheck the Topic CD you skipped in step 4. Then click OK.

The auto-alerts that come up after I log in to the Scholastic Management Suite include alerts for Scholastic Reading Counts! Can I turn the Reading Counts! auto-alerts off and keep the READ 180 alerts on?

  • At this time, the only adjustment you can make to the auto-alerts feature is to turn it on or off.
  • That means that if you turned it off, you would not receive any auto-alerts at all, including READ 180 auto-alerts.
  • However this same information is contained in the Alerts report in the READ 180 reports list.
