Change the application that opens a file (also know as the file association)

This is a quick little tip that may come in handy some day.

Sometimes I would edit a picture in Photoshop but would want to be able to view it quickly with the MacOS X Preview software. The Preview Application loads much quicker than Photoshop and is a lot less obtrusive (no floating tools, etc). This can be done in a few short steps.

  1. Find the file that you are going to change (In my example, the file is called 'pink flower - patchwork.psd')
  2. Control Click on the file and select Show Info.
  3. When the Show Info box pops up, click on the General Information pull down menu and select Open with Application.
  4. Next, you will see the icon and the name of the application that the file is associated with (in this case, it was associated with Adobe Photoshop).
  5. Now click on the down arrow and scroll through the list until you see the application that you are looking for. In my case it was Preview 1.1.
  6. You can then choose whether to change all files like this one.
