What's New in Apple Backup 1.2?

At MacWorld NY this summer, Apple announced that iTools (free) would become .Mac (not free - $99.00 Annual Subscription Rate). One of the core components of the new .Mac was Backup, a utility for backing up your important files. Apple has recently updated Backup to work with MacOS 10.2. Apple has added a couple new features but most notably changed the look of the program to match their iApps (iTunes, iMove, iPhoto).

Main Window : The main difference between the two applications (as you can see below) is the fact that Backup 1.2 has the brushed metal look to match the other iApps released from Apple.

Many things have stayed the same in Backup 1.2 but there are some subtle differences.

  • The Find, Preferences, Log and Buy Storage buttons are only available by clicking the Show/Hide button in the upper right hand corner. These were previously visible by default and could be hidden.
  • Schedule Backups Text button replaced with a small calendar icon.
  • Eject Disc Icon added.

Span Multiple CD's : A feature that many people were looking for was added with this update. You can now back up to multiple CD's/DVD's. As you add data to be backed up, Backup calculates how much space this will take up and how many disks you will need. I have not used this yet but, expect that it will work well.

I've only used this update for a short period of time, but I like the features that have been added. I also like the fact that Apple was quick to implement changes that were necessary. If you have any question or comments feel free to contact me. Email, IM or Ask me a Question.
