| Sharing Your Photos Ordering Prints, Ordering Book and Creating a Home Page
Not all pictures that you take are winners. In fact, having the ability to choose which pictures are keepers is what makes owning a digital camera great. The down side is that it is hard to share your pictures with others (unless you lug your computer around everywhere). As you learned in lesson 6A, you can always print your images with your color printer. But that doesn't give you the feel of traditional photographs. In this lesson you will learn to have our images professionally printed, create a book and create a home page . Order Prints : Using the integrated Kodak photo processing service, having your pictures professionally printed is a snap. First, select all of the images that you would like to have printed. Next, click on the Order Prints button. This will connect you to Kodak Print Services (see image 6A). This is where you will select the size and quantity of the prints you will order. note - To use this service you must set up an account. You will be instructed how to do this the first time you order prints.
image 6A - Kodak Print Services Selection Panel As you can see in images 6A (above), you select the size and quantity of prints by typing in the number of prints that you would like to order next to the size you want. I selected two 4x6 prints and one 20x30 print of the first image, and two 4x6 prints of the second image. Your order total is calculated as you change the quantity. Once you have selected all the images that you would like to order, click on the Buy Now button. Your images will then be uploaded to Kodak where they will be processed. I have found that the turn around time for ordering prints is very fast. I have usually received my prints in two days. When ordering prints, it is very important that you use high resolution images. In the image below, you can see that there are Low Resolution Warnings (indicated by the yellow triangle with the quotation mark) for every size except 4x6 and wallet. This is an indication that your print may not look good because the picture was taken at too low of a resolution. I would always recommend that you take pictures at the Highest Quality setting your camera has. This will allow you to print images at larger sizes.
low resolution warnings (indicated by the yellow triangle with the quotation mark) Book Layout : The first step to laying out a book in iPhoto is selecting the images to be included in the book. My first step in laying out a book is to create a new photo album of just the pictures to be included in the book. This allows me to view all of the images at once, and rearrange them as needed. You may want to consider the number of pictures to include in the book. Each page can have a maximum of 4 images (depending on the type of book - yearbook style can have up to 32 SMALL images per page) and the base price is $29.99 (plus tax and shipping $7.99) with each additional page costing $3.00. With that in mind, you probably want to shoot for about 30 - 40 pictures. Once you have selected the images that you want to use, click on the Book button (image below). This will put you in the book layout mode.
The next step is to select the type of book that you will create. There are six book themes to choose from. Catalog : Uses thumbnail images to show of products. Has room for a product title and description. You can have one, four or eight images per page. Classic : Standard page layout. Can have between one and four images per page with text underneath each image. Picture Book : Each page can have between one and four images with no text. Allows for full page pictures with no border. Portfolio : A more professional layout with one to four images per page. Each image can have a title and a short description. Storybook : A very interesting layout with images that run off of the page (see image below). Each page can have between one and three images and has room for text.
sample storybook layout - as you can see, the images in my book have a low resolution warning. Yearbook : Layout is similar to a High School Yearbook with up to 32 images per page and room for a name and a small amount of text with each image. Obviously, the Theme of the book you are going to create will most likely be determined by the use of the book (you probably wouldn't use storybook for a business). Once you have selected the Theme of book, you will then begin to work with the layout of the book. To do this you will use the book layout tools (see image below).
book layout tools Book Layout Tools : Here are some of the options that you have when laying out your book. Show Guides allows you to turn on or off the text guides (areas where you can add text). Turning these off will give you a better idea of how the book will look when printed. Titles, Comments and Page Numbers : Turning these on or off allows these items to be displayed on the page as you work with your book. Page Design allows you to select the page design for each page as well as the number of images per page. A page that is has a Cover design has only one image and a space for text while an introduction page has only text, no pictures. Lock Page : Once you have a page the way you want it to look then you should put a check mark next to Lock Page. You can do this for each individual page to insure that the layout will stay as is. Pages that are locked will have a small padlock icon under them. If you want to make changes to a page that is locked, you need to uncheck Lock Page. Preview : by clicking this button, you can view your book in a window all its own to see how the book will look when printed. Extra Tip : Much of laying out the book is trial and error as well as personal taste. One thing you can do is rearrange the pictures that you have selected. This is another reason I suggest you create an individual photo album for the images to placed in the book. By rearranging the images, you can change the layout of the book. Ordering a Book : Once you have your layout done, you have to click on the Share button and then the Order Book button to start the ordering process. Once you click the Order Book button, iPhoto will assemble the book and then connect to Apple. If there are any images that have a resolution that is too low, you will be warned as iPhoto assembles your book. Next, you will select the color for the cover of the book (see image below) and the number of copies. Color choices are Burgundy, Navy, Black and Light Grey. When you click Buy Now, iPhoto will upload your Layout and all of the images to the server for printing.
order book panel Home Page : Publishing your images to a home page is an excellent way for people all around the world to see your pictures. As with all of these tools, the first step is to select the photos that you would like to put on your web page. Next, click on the Home Page button. iPhoto will then connect to your iDisk (part of your .Mac account). After iPhoto connects to your iDisk, a page layout window will open. Here you can type in a title for the page, a caption for each image, and select a border for each image. To change the title of the Page or any of the text on the page, click on the text that you would like to change, erase it and start typing your own text. To add borders to the images, click on the borders at the bottom of the layout page. This will show you what the images will look like after a border is applied to them. You can use any of the four borders or you can use no border by clicking on the first image (with no border). The images on the main page are just thumbnails (small versions of the original image). To view the full size image, you would click on the thumbnail. When you are done laying out the page, click on the Publish button. This will upload the page and all of the images to your iDisk. Once they are on your iDisk, you can then give the web address to anyone you want to view the images. Warning - if you are using your iDisk as a web server for a web site that you have created, using something other than the Apple Home Page Tools, then you will not want to use the iPhoto home page creation tool described above. Using this tool will make the page of pictures that you have uploaded the index page (main page) overriding any page that you have set as the index or home page. If you want to create a page of pictures for use with a web site that you have created then you must use the Export Button. Use of the Export Button is discussed in lesson 6D.
In lesson 6D, you will learn to set the desktop, create a screensaver and Export your photos in various formats. |
