Situated around Lake Pichola, Udaipur one of India’s premier tourist locations. Often termed India’s most romantic city, Udaipur also was the home of Rajput kings whose fanciful palaces rivaled their Mughal counterparts. Jagmandir Island, was the pleasure island of Maharaja Jagat Singh and at times his military base. The next Maharaja, Jagat Singh II, built the palace of Jagniwas Island as a summer residence for the royals. Apparently, the successor wanted to outdo his predecessor’s efforts. The product, the Lake Palace, became a hotel in the 1960s and then became a set for the Bond film, Octopussy.
