In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh painted the city of Jaipur pink to welcome King Edward VII. That tradition remains today. Throughout this Rajput city, known widely as the Pink City, buildings are painted pink with white trim. Everywhere you go, this tradition remains.
Jaipur was once a formidable city. Led by a wise and calculating Jai Singh, Jaipur became a quickly prosperous and large city, with considerable faculties in the arts and sciences. However, after choosing the wrong Mughal during a succession dispute, the kingdom lost land and power. Today, Jaipur is a popular tourist spot for both international and domestic tourists. Many fine havelis and palaces have been restored as accomodations for tourists.
