Literally the Palace of the Winds, the Hawa Mahal was a place designed specifically for women. From behind the front facade, women, who were not permitted to interact with daily life due to Mughal and Islamic restrictions, would watch the city through small carved screens. From behind the screens, they observed daily life.
Within the palace, women also go about their own lives, socializing, etc. from behind the 950 plus grilled, sandstone windows. Today, you can climb to the top and look over the city. In the distance, forts line moutaintops, and the city sprawls out from its walled constraints.
