Much reading

Over my Christmas trip, I read The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, and, for a change of pace, The DaVinci Code. I've then started reading The Waste Land, continuing the Dark Tower series.

Angels & Demons

I just finished Angels & Demons. It was okay, a page turner, but nothing spectacular. I'm going to be starting The Gunslinger next. This will be my last post before leaving for my Dad's for Christmas. I'll be back on the 27th.

Change in Plans

I've decided to not reread The Lord of the Rings. Instead, I'm reading Dan Brown's Angels & Demons (the novel he wrote before The DaVinci Code, and involving the same main character). Next, I'll read the five volumes of Stephen King's The Dark Tower. I picked up all these games at Powell's this afternoon.

Fellowship

Seeing The Return of the King has inspired me to reread The Lord of the Rings, so I've started doing so. For the 20th time or so (I've lost count).

Cryptonomicon Finished

I stayed up until 3 am to finish Cryptonomicon. I'd forgotten how good that book is. This morning I started rereading Helter Skelter, which I haven't read in a very long time. One of my few childhood memories is returning from our first visit to California to news of the Tate murders. This is a book that always scares me when I read it.

The End of World War I

I have finished The First World War Vol. 1! It's only taken slightly over a month. I'll definitely pick up volume 2 whenever it comes out. Now all I have to do is decide what to read next.

Financing the War

I've finally finished the chapter on Financing the War, 178 pages on bank loans and war bonds. I almost didn't make it through it. I've now begun the chapter on Industrial Mobilization, it's been more interesting so far.

Africa

I've finished the chapter on the war in sub-Saharan Africa. It was quite interesting, it's a theater of WWI you rarely read anything about. Movement of the armies was determined solely by supply (and in particular having enough porters). In the fighting in German East Africa (Tanganyika) the British had about 4,500 soldiers killed in battle, 6,500 soldiers dead of disease, and 90,000 carriers dead. Now it's on to the chapter about Turkey's entry into the war.

The Pacific

I've finished the chapter on the war in the Pacific. Now Japan knew what it was doing, and so did Britain with respect to the Anglo-Japanese alliance. Now it's off on the longest chapter in the book about the war in Sub-Saharan Africa.
