Our Visit With Emma In North Carolina

We never saw the sun in the six days we were there, but we did see lots of tacky lawn art, Appalachian culture and some beautiful country

Allen and Sons Barbecue! This pig did not die in vain.
BBQ, slaw, hushpuppies. That's what it's about.
All creative energy focused on the cuisine, not frills.
Where there's smoke, there's barbecue in the Carolinas.
Hmmm. Looks like they started in about 1971.
Denise had to kibitz in Emma's apartment design.
Hmmm. Should this be our east coast retirement home?
We liked it, except that it has too much lawn.
Q Shack rocks! Brisket and chopped pork.
421 Flea Market. Did they mean to say Garish Gifts?
East LA in Appalachia? We felt right at home.
This quality flea market even had eveningwear.
Speechless.
Do you believe in angels? Gaudy pink ones?
Medical Professional offices at the 421 Flea Market.
On the apple trail. We found some unusual varieties.
Lawn supervision. "Denise, I think you missed a spot"
Y'all come back now, y'hear?"
Lawn art, expertly crafted.
Denise, enraptured, found acres of hillbilly art.
A Mt. Airy (Mayberry) gazebo
Mt. Airy aka Mayberry NC. Andy Griffith's home.
"Don't jump, Bo. The sun will come out."
"HEY DAD! WE'RE ON PILOT MOUNTAIN!"
The swirling mist at Pilot Mountain

Chapel Hill Post Office mural... or Camptonville?
Emma's living room lit by strings of Christmas lights.
She couldn't afford a classy lamp from the flea market.
Brunswick Stew... yummy!
More seared hog flesh and fixin's.
Denise and Emma hoggin' the huspuppies.
