Iraklion Archaeological Museum Excavation Team
Jacinda Hadzidakis journal entry: October 12, 2005Work continues on the second of these unusual structures. We learned a lot the last time around, so things have been going much quicker. We've made a lot of progress in just the last couple of days determining the layout of the tiles. I still can't believe they got so screwed up at the beginning of the excavation. We did a test of the water-powered gateways today, and the letter system on the tiles works differently, which caught me totally by surprise. But that's not the only thing that's different.
I still don't know what to make of this site. The structure is built in the same way and out of the same materials as the first site, and it's close enough that I'd guess the same people built both. But the orientation and layout of the structure is different. Plus, the altar here is devoted to Britomartis (in the temple she is referred to as Dictynna), who was a mainstream Cretan goddess. So why is this temple also so far off the beaten path?
I can't help but wonder just who built this thing? How many of them are there? Why are they here? Why are they so different than all the normal religious sites? It's frustrating that at this point, we're just getting more questions. I wish Pappous was here.
