Bill Ivey: "America Needs a New System for Supporting the Arts"As we go off to arts advocacy day former NEA
Chair wonders if we are on the right path.
Bill Ivey, the former Chairman of the NEA and the
director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at
Vanderbilt University writes in a recent issue of the Chronicle for Higher
Education that the current infrastructure for support the arts in this country
needs to be rethought.
His article clearly defines the major milestones that have led to a "matching grant" cultural environment and a narrow definition of the arts in this country. He suggest the entire enterprise needs to be rethought, argues for as much attention and advocacy to bigger issues affecting the field including the expansion of copyright laws, the deregulation of radio, TV and cable which, he maintains, has had an even bigger impact on the broader field of the arts than the annual discussion of funding for the NEA. Whether you agree or disagree... it is a very well written and thought provoking article. Enjoy!
