Revised Arkansas Arts Education Law Heads Toward PassageMusic/Arts Education Advocates Poised to Snatch
Victory from Jaws of Defeat!
The Arkansas House Education Committee passed the
Arts friendly Senate version of HB1034 mandating Music and Art education for
every child in grades K-6 taught by a certified teacher. The original version of
the bill would have eliminated the need for certified teachers and made music OR
art the option (and only for 20 minutes a
week.
Passage by the full House is expected tomorrow (2/18) and should be signed into law by Governor Huckabee on Monday (2/22). There are many lessons to be learned from this battle. I will save these for another time. With one more day t go and all the twists and turns this bill has taken... we will avoid a celebration until the ink is dry from the Governor's pen.
