Wallingford Playfield Projects

Constuction Documents and Constuction for the Playground and Wading Pool Areas and Perimeter Path
With the help of a grant from the Department of Neighborhoods, our landscape architect Allworth Nussbaum, and the community, FoWP has completed this project to provide the Department of Parks and Recreation with construction documents for the areas of the park not included in the previous projects (see below).

Construction of the new playground, improved landscaping and other enhancements to the wading pool area, and a perimeter path that will connect to the existing path at the east end of the park, will begin in August, 2002, after the summer program at the wading pool is over. These areas will be closed to the public during construction, which should be completed by the end of 2002. The community will get a chance to help put together the new play structures in the play area, and will help with plantings.

In addition, some construction will occur at some of the entrances to the park, and benches will be installed along the perimeter path and throughout the park. After the contractors have completed this phase of the constuction, there will still be chances for community members to contribute to park improvements, through FoWP's participation in the Adopt-A-Park program, and through art projects. SE Picnic Area and Sunken Garden Construction Documents and Construction
FoWP received two grants from the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) to help finance construction document preparation and subsequent construction in the SE Picnic Area (formerly the horseshoe pit area) and the Sunken Garden (the area between the south entrance at Densmore and the southwest entrance at Woodlawn adjacent to the playground at Hamilton Middle School).

FoWP hired the landscape architecture firm of Allworth Nussbaum to complete the construction documents for these areas. A-1 Landscaping provided contracting services for construction, and the community put in time, money and effort via planting parties and additional construction supervision.

The SE Picnic Area has been regraded to remove the horseshoe pit, reseeded, and planted along the perimeter. Boulders provide a way for kids to get up to the overlook, which will be completed later this year by the community. The Sunken Garden has a new, winding, gravel path, and has been substantially replanted. Pocket seating areas feature huge boulders. Final planting is scheduled for this fall, and community work parties will occur from time to time to keep these areas maintained.

Drainage and Irrigation Project
This project is underway through the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Fuji Industries completed the replacement of the grass and placing of irrigation and drainage infrastructure last summer. The field area continues to have some drainage problems, which are being addressed by DPR and the community. If you would like to help with maintaining the field, please contact us at 548-9588 or fowp@wallingford.org.

Native Garden on West Slope
In a collaboration between DPR, FoWP, the Washington Native Plant Society and Hamilton Middle School, this project saw the students at Hamilton design and implement a native landscape on the west slope of the park, outside the fence to the sidewalk. This landscape will replace and/or enhance the current landscape, which consists of grass, cotoneaster, laurel, and various bushes and trees, including cherry, mountain ash, cedar, and others. It is anticipated that the resulting landscape will be maintained by the students at Hamilton and the residents across the street from the park on Woodlawn Avenue.

The project is being overseen by the Adopt-A-Park program. FoWP has adopted this park, with a view towards involving the schools adjoining the park (Hamilton and Lincoln) and the neighbors and community. For more information, please contact Bob Goldberg of FoWP at 545-8651.

The West Slope project has been completed in two phases. Native vegetation now is growing along Woodlawn Avenue. Occasional community work parties will occur to weed and replace unsuccessful plants. Again, contact Bob Goldberg at the phone number above for more information.
