Dear Neighbor,
Great things are happening at your neighborhood park! After three long years of planning, Friends of Wallingford Playfield is overjoyed to announce that the final phase of construction is scheduled to begin later this summer. We hope that you have had time to stroll through the park and admire the two areas on the south edge of the park that were completed this spring: the meandering path of the Sunken Garden with new plantings and majestic boulders, and the grassy shade of the Southeast Picnic Area. Remember how these areas looked a year ago?

The construction to be completed this fall will include all new playground equipment, extensive landscaping surrounding the wading pool, and a crushed rock path around the playfield connecting to the paths on the east end of the park. The Parks for All Levy approved by voters two years ago will fund most of the construction. However, some costs are NOT covered by these funds and we need your help to make these improvements a success.

Look for our yellow donor cards & make a donation now. Thanks for your support!

WORK PARTY A BIG SUCCESS
Friends of Wallingford Playfield sponsored a work party which made improvements in several parts of the park. We had 24 volunteers sign in, and had one $600 donation for a bench. We got lots done:

1) We filled in the gaps by the SW entry stairs with gravel, cleared away the rubbish and brush, and opened up the sunken garden area.
2) We made a slope for a mower to get down into the horseshoe pit, regraded that whole area, and removed morning glory and other weeds from the picnic area.
3) We spread the mulch that Parks moved to the wading pool area. This job involved several kids, and was very fun!
4) Certainly not least, we filled in mulch on the west slope, and removed sod on the north end of the slope, and mulched there. It looks great!!!

...And The Fence Came Down
by Greg Flood, FoWP
(from The Wallpaper, April, 2001 edition)

The dismantling of the barrier fence last week (middle March) at Wallingford Playfield has been welcomed as friends and neighbors flocked to the field for various forms of informal play. The FoWP design process for the Sunken Garden and SE Picnic Area along the south edge of the park will be complete in mid-April. Construction of these two areas, mainly via community work parties, is planned to begin at the end of May. If you are interested in donating time or materials, give us a call (548-9588)!

Why is FoWP working on the south areas? Funding for improvements at the park is in the Parks for All levy approved last fall. Projects that are ready to go will be implemented first. Volunteer labor for construction of the south areas will allow FoWP to complete design documents for the remainder of the park this summer using a $51,000 Dept. of Neighborhoods matching grant. With design documents in hand, Parks will be ready for construction, anticipated to begin Spring, 2002, including improved landscaping, play area improvements, a new permeter path and improvements to the restroom and tennis court areas.

Join FoWP to celebrate reopening of the playfield and learn more about the projects as we enter the third and (hopefully) final year of the design process: Saturday, April 14, 2001, 2:00 to 6:00 pm at Wallingford Playfield.

Friends of Wallingford Playfield (FoWP) was officially awarded a Large Projects Fund grant from the Department of Neighborhoods at a ceremony attended by Mayor Schell and representatives from many city departments. This grant will help pay for the completion of construction documents for improvements at Wallingford Playfield, and the construction planned for the Southeast Picnic Area and the Sunken Garden in the spring and summer of 2001.

FoWP sponsored a "Summer in December" open house at Wally's Scoop on 45th Street in Wallingford to inform the community of planned improvements to Wallingford Playfield now being designed, and to let the community have input on various features of the planned construction in the SE Picnic Area and the Sunken Garden. FoWP also is currently looking for volunteers to help in administering the grants we have received, and to manage the many tasks required in getting our projects done, and signup sheets were available at the open house for many of these positions.
