unimagined futures

Developing a work approach that is adequate to the challenges ahead
a world moving toward new and different futureS

Career Evolution (a starting point)

Career evolution can be viewed as a constellation. When we locate the "big dipper" in the sky at night we see the configuration first and then maybe the individual stars. Different constellations have different configurations. In career evolution the components vary and their arrangement depends on us.

One of the primary components of career evolution is the notion that we're embedded in a world moving in time. There are two parts to this notion: an external world at different points in time and our age and circumstances at different points in time. If Bill Gates or President Barack Obama had been born thirty years earlier they would have had different evolutionary paths.

Changing social and economic picture

Below is a listing of recent technology articles that appeared in the NYT feed. For each story somebody had to do something different (a career evolution) to produce the describe change and for each story the recipient of the change entered a new reality which will push others to do something different (a career evolution).

A view of the constant flow of change (a dimension of TLN)

We enter the world of work with almost no preparation for the challenges that reside down the road. This suggests the need for some career evolution.

In the "old days" career evolution consisted primarily of a college degree, climbing the organization ladder and retirement.

Managing Oneself provides a life-long foundational work approach to career evolution. A further step toward career evolution is becoming an effective executive.

Early career work provides a check list for college students.

At the beginning of the page I mentions career evolution components and configurations. Some components can be acquired from conceptual resources. These can be configured into a work map.

All of the preceding are based on the notion that we need to look out the window at the real world moving in time rather than drift along basing our approach on something we heard from someone with an inside view of yesterday.

Exploring the main career evolution page provides a career vision enhancer and "work menu."
