Luther Vandross hit just the right notes Friday: soulful, joyful and powerful,
an echo of the late singer's unforgettable voice.
... snip, snip
...
Vandross' wide appeal was evident in the first few rows of mourners, where current hitmakers Usher and Alicia Keys shared space with music legends Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. "There are no sad faces here today," said longtime friend LaBelle, resplendent in a bright yellow dress with a diamond necklace and earrings. "It's not a mournful service. I'm celebrating because Luther would want us too." Mourners lined up for two city blocks in a driving rain before the church opened. Once inside, they were brought to their feet and moved to cheers repeatedly as Vandross favorites Wonder, Franklin and Cissy Houston sang in tribute. Houston performed the gospel standard "Deep River," while Wonder left the crowd breathless with his version of the gospel song "I Won't Complain." But it was Franklin, brushing aside a slight sore throat, who sent choir and clergy dancing on the altar with her version of "Amazing Grace." Franklin began to ad-lib at song's end, addressing the Vandross family and congregation as the music swelled and the crowd clapped along. "We should be happy for Luther," her message said. "He made a difference in this world, and now he has the extraordinary chance to dance with his father again." See the rest of the story ... NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Baby boomers are changing

Unlike previous generations, when retirement was viewed as a time to wind down, baby boomers plan to spend their golden years cycling between work and leisure. So reports "The New Retirement Survey" from Merrill Lynch and Harris Interactive. The report concludes that baby boomers are creating a whole new life stage. Here's how: Boomers are retiring later. Members of the baby-boom generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) are expected to live an average seven years longer than their parents. As a result, many don't plan to retire by age 65, but instead work longer to further their goals, according to the survey of 4,448 in that age category. See the rest of the story ... STORIES
By MarketWatch Last Update: 1:57 PM ET Mar 3, 2005 Nothing in life is truly guaranteed. Take Social Security. That program was created as an unbreakable promise to the American people that they would be taken care of in old age. We all know where that is headed. Then there are traditional pension plans, which
formed the bedrock of retirement for so many working Americans in days gone by.
Most companies have done away with those for younger workers and older workers
can be forgiven if they feel their "guarantee" is shaky. And how about the other
benefits you are supposed to get in retirement -- health care, life insurance
and the like. Think you're going to see
those?
One of the biggest problems with these promises is they are made by companies which in many instances won't exist in the same form in just a few years, either being merged or acquired or -- in extreme cases -- reorganized. The new bosses often have little incentive for honoring old agreements. Our lead story looks at just what retirees and those nearing retirement can expect when their company is the subject of M&A activity. Read Robert Powell's column, plus find out why consumer groups are targeting drug-company ads with humorous put-downs and see what investment managers think of India's prospects, on Thursday's Personal Finance pages. The emerging fend-for-yourself society may turn out to be a better model than the one crafted out of the Great Depression of the 1930s. But it can be pretty rough on people who for most of their lives were assured they wouldn't, in fact, have to fend for themselves. BRZEZINKA, Poland - As candles flickered in the snowy, winter gloom, world leaders and Auschwitz survivors Thursday remembered victims of the Holocaust on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp. The ceremony, which opened with the recorded rumble of an approaching train, was held on the spot where new arrivals were brought in by rail to the vast camp and put through "selection" -- meaning those few who were deemed able to work were separated from the rest who were taken immediately to the gas chambers. "It seems if you listen hard enough, you can still hear the outcry of horror of the murdered people," Israeli President Moshe Katsav said.
