Fire StorySo here's what
happened.
I was out for the night watching a movie ("Children Of Men") and I got a call from Roberto around 10:45. He said that the apartment next to us was on fire. So I head out to get home pretty quick. Luckily I was less than a mile away so I got there fast. Unfortunately, there are now 6 fire engines, ambulances, police and a slew of onlookers, so I have to park one street over. The apartment one up and one to the south is the one that went up. I was afraid that it was the one across the hall since she's out of town and her dog is still there. Roberto wasn't home when it started, but he got there when the fire was raging, and apparently it was a sight to see. He did a great job of rounding up Felix (he was with Roberto's girlfriend in the car) getting my computer and hard drives out and piling up my clothes in the living room. Then I started getting the other little things (financial documents, tax papers, birth certificate, passport, etc.) and began hoofing it to get back to the car. It took 3 trips just to get the clothes all over (that's the problem with 30 some shirts from the job) to the car. I managed to fit everything important in the car in one shot. By the time we got everything put away the fire was well under control, but I didn't want to deal with the possible smoke damage (to my things or to me) so I still decided to stay at my parent's for the night and see how it was the next day. I didn't want Felix to have to hang out in a bad place either while I'm gone at work all day. I went to bed around 2:15 am and I was on time to work at 8. I did call Denise during the mayhem just to let her know if I am a no show the next that I have good reason. I'm keeping my streak of not calling out going strong. I think the last time I called out for being sick was March 1998, and I could have worked. I didn't feel great, but I could have made it. It was a rainy day and they would have sent me home early anyway since it was when I was a lowly intern and I wasn't the powerhouse I am now. Back to the story at hand. The only room that really had any problem with me is the bathroom. You could see black soot on the ceiling from the vent. The whole room had a light coating of ick. If I moved the Listerine bottle you could see the perfect outline on the countertop. I turned the fan on, closed the door and left it. It's still closed and the fan is still on. I know I'm going to have to deal with it, but if I can keep it contained in there I won't have to deal with it in my bedroom or even worse, my closet which is right next to the bathroom. Maybe I'll get some baking soda boxes to absorb that aroma. I don't know what works best. I did get to meet some of my neighbors during all this. People were asking if I needed help, did my dog get out okay, nice things to talk about. Too bad it takes something bad to get to chat, but that's the way I am. So here it is, 3 days later, and the apartment management hasn't talked to me about anything. They did send someone in to clean up a bit (without my consent) yesterday. I have the whole thing on FelixCam. They didn't do a horrible job, but they certainly didn't do a good job. Enough to get rid of the appearance of smoke damage, but nothing about the long lasting effects of it. I know the people on the top floors above me are moved out because they had the worst of it since they shared a common attic. I only really notice the flavor when I first come in or when I go near the bathroom. I do catch it when I head outside, but that's because the people above me are clearing up and out the best that they can. And that means tossing out a lot of smelly stuff. I don't know anything about causes. There are rumors of a meth lab. There's also the possibility of bad wiring. The day of the fire they were wiring my place for the washer/dryer installation. It's possible that something went bad there. I'm just glad that I got by with just some inconvenience and a stinky bathroom. I didn't lose everything.
